The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Nakuru arrested an alleged fake magistrate on Saturday, October 9, accused of running his own court.
A report by Daily Nation indicated that the fake magistrate had also posed as the brother of Devolution Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter.
Confirming the incident, Nakuru DCI boss Anthony Sunguti noted that the suspect was nabbed in a sting operation by detectives from the Rift Valley town.
He also noted that investigations into the conduct of the fake magistrate had been ongoing for a year.
During the operation, fake appointment letters bearing the letterhead of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) were recovered alongside other items.
"Our officers arrested the suspect who has been on the run after duping unsuspecting members of the public by posing as a magistrate," stated Sunguti.
One of the victims identified as Samuel Soi revealed that while posing as CS Keter's brother, the fake magistrate conned him Ksh1.6 Million after promising him a job.
On a separate occasion, the victim also disclosed that he parted with Ksh100,000 after he was promised that a case he had filed at Nakuru Law Courts would be solved faster.
The fake magistrate was accused of carrying out the offenses between March 15, 2018, and December 31, 2019.
It was also revealed that there were no records indicating that he had been hired by JSC or was licensed to practice as a magistrate.
This comes even as con cases continue to rise countrywide as the Covid-19 pandemic continues to batter the economy leading to the loss of jobs in droves.
In mid-September, An Indian tycoon, Malian Sanjay, lost Ksh200 Million to a well-organized gold con scheme orchestrated by Nairobi conmen.
The DCI announced that Sanjay was approached by a Guinea-based fraudster who had offered to sell him 44.45 kgs of gold.
After being approached, the tycoon paid a total of Ksh195 Million ($1,780,000) for the gold to be shipped from Guinea Bissau and flown to India through the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
