Michelle Serut, daughter to former Elgon Member Parliament John Serut, is appealing to Kenyans to help offset her father's bill.

In a statement posted on her social media pages, Michelle disclosed that her father was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in January 2020 and had been in and out of hospital.

Multiple myeloma is a cancer that forms in a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell that affects multiple organs like the kidneys, bones and liver.

She added that the family had so far catered to bills totaling Ksh 20 million.

"We have had bills totaling to about 20 million since his diagnosis and have handled it as a family so far. We are now slightly stretched and therefore asking your help in catering for his bills hence this fundraiser," reads an excerpt of her statement.

Michelle explained that the family needed slightly over Ksh 5 million to cater for an insurance cover after exhausting the one that was in use.

"We pray you find it in your hearts to give whatever you can as we aim to raise 6,000,000 to cater for hospital bills and an insurance cover," reads an excerpt of her statement.

Serut is the immediate former MP of Mt Elgon Constituency in Bungoma County. He was trounced by the current lawmaker Fred Kapondi.

His plea came just a year after former Kieni MP Nemesyus Warugongo also appealed to Kenyans and well-wishers to assist him to offset medical bills that had accumulated for years.

The former legislator, whose illness was not made public, had been unwell for a long time.

Friends, family and former parliamentary colleagues met at a Nairobi hotel to raise funds.
