Joy Makena, the woman who was allegedly shot by Lamu Senator, Anwar Loitiptip, has spoken out on the ordeal she underwent at the hands of the lawmaker.

According to Makena, Senator Loitiptip was assaulting an unidentified woman who raised alarm for help as he was allegedly using a mop stick to assault her.

Makena, who was in the company of her husband, Jaso Turo and another woman identified as Rosemary, tried to mediate the situation to no fruition as upon intervention, a confrontation with the senator ensued.

The Senator then assaulted her with the mopstick and made his way back to his car. This is when the woman he was with told them to scatter as he was going to get his gun.

They fled to Kanu Grounds in Nanyuki and the senator allegedly chased after them and aimed the gun at them. They scampered in different directions, Turo and Rosemary ran towards trees in the grounds and were concealed by the night's darkness.

Makena fled towards the light and was followed by the senator who shot at her, with the bullet penetrating her right leg.

The police who arrived on the scene stated that they acted on a tip-off from members of the public who reported that there was a shooting at a bar at 2am on Saturday, October 23.

The couple is pleading with the government to have the case settled out of court as they have no financial capability to follow through with the case.

As of now, they lament that they are struggling with the hospital bills from the Nanyuki Referral Hospital, as both of them are unable to raise the amount owing to their megre wages as Turo works as a night guard and Makena is not employed.

Loitiptip appeared in court to answer to charges relating to the shooting incident in Nanyuki Town, Laikipia County on Monday, October 25, where he was released on a Ksh500,000 cash bail or an alternative bond of Ksh1 million.

However, the police are still conducting investigations on the matter. Nanyuki Resident Magistrate, Vincent Masivo, ordered him to avail himself to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) every two days.

The incident came just days after Anwar was accused of assaulting a political aspirant  affiliated with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party at the Manda Airport Jetty.
