"We had worked from morning to evening and when it got dark, we didn't have time to deposit that money so we decided to go home and deposit the money there.

"When we were near Voi at Maungu area, that is when we got into an accident. I sustained minor injuries and when I was able to walk, I went to find my husband and our child," Muthoni told the press.

Njuguna stated that they decided to deposit the money in Mombasa when they arrived and that is why they carried it in the car.

When police officers arrived at the scene of the accident they found the money, which was left in the car after the young family was rushed to the hospital. Police officers took the cash and later handed it over to the couple.

"When we got to the hospital in Maungu, the man told us that he had money in his car and he had not seen it. We decided to rush to the scene and we found people ransacking the vehicle. Some wanted to steal items from that car.

"We did not find the battery of the car. So we decided to search the people who we found there and also look inside the car and we found the money which totalled to Ksh450,000," the police officer stated.

Njuguna and his wife were thankful to the police officers who managed to find and safely return the money.

On Saturday, December 25, Inspector General of Police, Hilary Mutyambai, urged Kenyans to be careful while travelling for the festivities and also warned drivers against drunk driving. He also stated that security had been beefed up to curb incidents of insecurity.
