Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary-General Francis Atwoli, on Monday, January 31, declared that Deputy President William Ruto had already betrayed Amani National Congress (ANC) party leader Musalia Mudavadi.
Speaking during a consultative meeting at Golf Hotel, Kakamega, the visibly excited COTU boss remarked that Mudavadi’s political future was already in limbo barely days after forming a political pact with DP Ruto.
While making reference to comments made by United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Chairman Johnson Muthama on Monday, Atwoli insinuated that the Ruto-affiliated party had already denounced him.COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli Addresses the Press on Sunday, October 10 ,at Golf Hotel Kakamega.COTU secretary general Francis Atwoli
"Right now, Muthama is trending. Just after Musalia declared that they (Kenya Kwanza) are yet to decide among themselves (who will be the presidential candidate), Muthama said that they (Mudavadi and Wetangula) only joined UDA as friends,” Atwoli remarked.
He argued that Muthama would not have made the comments if Musalia and his Ford Kenya counterpart Moses Wetangula had not done what he described as begging for a political coalition with the country’s number Two.
"He (Muthama) declared that there was no agreement. The Chairman of UDA has already thrown him out. Those are the shortcomings of begging. Where will they go now?” Atwoli chided
The COTU boss also took the opportunity to hit out at Ruto, whom he accused of insulting leaders from the region.
"Tell Wiliam Samoei Ruto to stop insulting leaders. He even has the guts to look down upon me, your leader. Let me tell you, if he calls for any meeting in Kakamega, do not go!" he reprimanded.
The trade unionist has openly castigated the ANC-UDA alliance, arguing that the union would not get any votes in the vote-rich Western region.
He also poked holes at Mudavad's five-point manifesto on economic revival: a better economy, better devolution, better relationships, better leadership and a better economy.
"Mudavadi, in 1994, while minister for finance, sneaked in the redundancy clause into the Finance Bill of 1994, as suggested by the World Bank, which allowed employers to declare redundancy without consulting workers. So how will he empower workers?" Atwoli posed.
In the meeting attended by Defence Cabinet Secretary CS Eugene Wamalwa, Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya and other dignitaries, the leaders from Western Kenya endorsed the Azimio la Umoja patron Raila Odinga for the presidency in the August 9 poll.DP Ruto with Mr. Muthama at a past event
