Former Mt Elgon Member of Parliament, John Serut, is dead.

Serut, who was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in January 2020 and had been in and out of the hospital, died at a Nairobi hospital in the morning of Wednesday, February 16.

His daughter Michelle Serut mourned her father via a post on social media, expressing her sorrow and the moments that death has stolen from them.

"Rest in peace to the love of my life. I hate that you won't see my children. I hate that you won't get to see the woman I become but I'll make you proud. I love you, dad," she wrote.

The MP was one of the late President Daniel Moi's righthand men.

Multiple myeloma is a type of cancer that forms in a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell that affects multiple organs like the kidneys, bones and liver.

In October 2021, his daughter Michelle Serut appealed to Kenyans to help offset her father's bill. She had revealed that the family had spent Ksh20 million treating the former MP.

"We have had bills totalling to about Ksh20 million since his diagnosis and have handled it as a family so far. We are now slightly stretched and therefore asking your help in catering for his bills hence this fundraiser," Michelle stated.

Michelle explained that the family needed slightly over Ksh5 million to cater for an insurance cover after exhausting the one that was in use.

"We pray you to find it in your hearts to give whatever you can as we aim to raise 6,000,000 to cater for hospital bills and an insurance cover," her statement read.

According to Michelle, Serut was misdiagnosed with Anaemia in 2017 after seeking treatment at a local hospital. The former MP, according to the daughter, would faint and become unconscious.

During this time, Serut was treated and discharged. However, the situation worsened, later on, like Cancer, which was lurking in the shadows surfaced.

A specialist at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) attended to him and discovered that he had bone marrow cancer.

Michelle told Kenyans that their father's illness threw them in the deep end and put her in a spot where she saw how grim and expensive the healthcare sector in Kenya is.

Serut is the immediate former MP of Mt Elgon Constituency in Bungoma County. He was trounced by incumbent lawmaker Fred Kapondi in 2017.
