When The Standard photojournalist, Boniface Okendo, captured the now-viral pictures, of Winnie Nyar Kasagam, he was just another journalist on the job. However, this was a melodramatic moment for the woman in the frame.
Winnie Nyar Kasagam was captured with a brick charging towards a person who was accused of injuring her boyfriend, George Odinga, during a Gor Mahia match at Kasarani Sports Centre against Vihiga Bullets.
She stated that after the pictures went viral she was embarrassed over her actions because her image had been tainted publicly and people who know her also shared the images with her on WhatsApp.
“I felt embarrassed when the photos went viral. That’s not the reputation I would want to have. Many people forwarded the pictures to me," Nyar Kasagam stated.
The 29-year-old remarked that although she wanted to retaliate on behalf of Odinga, she realized that the person who had injured the man was known to her.
She explained that normally she wouldn't act out of character but on the material day her emotions got the better of her and she was not her usual self.
“I am a calm person. The Winnie you saw carrying a stone at the stadium wasn’t the person every other knows. I was emotionally disturbed. And you know when the heartaches, the mind and body react.
"He had been injured. It angered me because my lover supports me financially, and is the breadwinner in our relationship," the mother of three was quoted by the Standard.
“Initially, there were rumours that he’d been fatally injured. I had just arrived at Kasarani Stadium, only to hear that he had been seriously assailed. When I entered the stadium, I found him lying on the ground unconscious," she added.
Nyar Kasagam stated that although she wanted to hurt someone with the brick she decided not to attack the person who had injured Odinga. She added that looking back now she was glad that she did not injure anyone because she would be regretting her actions.
She explained that Odinga sustained serious injuries and his treatment cost them a lot of money which they did not have at the moment. The businesswoman revealed that her grocery business had been affected by demolitions and that she had nowhere to turn to.
Nyar Kasagam appealed to members of the public and well-wishers to help her secure a job or revive the business which she and her family depend on.
