The Independent Electorial and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced that it will investigate utterances made by Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria who suggested that they had rigged votes in favour of President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Speaking during the swearing-in of new IEBC CEO Marjan Hussein on Wednesday, March 16, IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati announced that the commission was fully aware of the remarks made by Kuria.

The electoral commission boss noted that the outspoken legislator would be summoned after the investigations by his team.

“We are aware of what he said but people always have their versions of what they said. So our investigation team is probing before we summon him,” Chebukati stated.

During the UDA's National Delegates Convention, the Gatundu South MP claimed that he and other political leaders, now allied to Deputy President William Ruto, helped Uhuru to “steal votes” during elections.

Jubilee Vice Chair David Murathe who appeared on Citizen Tv on Tuesday, March 15, called for Kuria to be probed over his remarks.

According to Murathe, President Kenyatta did a well-choreographed campaign that saw them win the polls. He further added that they are not aware of any vote-rigging.

In a similar incident, Murang'a Woman Representative Sabina Chege, was on February 11, 2022 summoned by the IEBC after she made utterances in Vihiga county the previous day, suggesting that Jubilee Party rigged the 2017 elections in favor of President Kenyatta.

Chege claimed that the polls were stolen and a similar scenario might play out in the August 2022 General Elections.

On the date of the hearing before the IEBC Electoral Code of Conduct enforcement committee, Chege failed to appear after being taken ill.

"The respondent is not in attendance today as she is indisposed and has been admitted to Nairobi Hospital," said her lawyer, Senior Counsel Otiende Amollo.

On February 21, Chege sued the IEBC saying that it had no grounds to hear her case since she had not submitted any papers indicating that she will vie, neither had she declared her candidature.

She further stated that the commission had a predetermined verdict to block her from participating in the 2022 polls in the event she decides to vie.
