Former Devolution Principal Secretary, Irungu Nyakera, has explained his decision to join Deputy President William Ruto's led Kenya Kwanza, weeks after endorsing Raila Odinga.
In a statement dated Thursday, March 23, the Farmers Party leader stated that he decided to join the DP camp as his party resonated with the economic policies of Kenya Kwanza.
The Murang'a gubernatorial aspirant stated that his party felt much safer in the DP's camp, adding that it was the winning team.
"I believe in the economic elevation of farmers. I believe we would be in better hands under a coalition that prioritizes the economic development of ordinary mwananchi, particularly farmers. That is Kenya Kwanza," the PS stated.
Nyakera and his officials decamped to Kenya Kwanza on Wednesday, March 22, and held a meeting with the DP at his Karen office.
At the event, he hit out at Azimio La Umoja, stating that its economic model was unattainable for many farmers in the country.
"The trickle-down model does not work for the farmers. It does not work for the grassroots. We really have to work at the grassroots because the people at the bottom are the farmers," the former PS stated.
After decamping, Ruto took to social media to announce their new partnership, stating that the alliance had been bolstered ahead of the August 9 polls.
"Held talks with the leadership and membership of the Farmers Party who have committed to work with us," the DP stated.
Nyakera had endorsed the candidature of Raila during the coalitions' National Delegates Conference (NDC) at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC) on March 12.
His party's presence at the event was announced by Kieni MP, Kanini Kega, who invited the party's Secretary-General to sign the Azimio deal.
A day before, Nyakera was also among the parties that officially joined the One Kenya Alliance whose majority of principals have joined Azimio with the latest being Narc Kenya leader, Martha Karua.
