Kenyans have been debating whether one of the late President Mwai Kibaki's grandsons snubbed former Prime Minister Raila Odinga's handshake.

However, Kenyans.co.ke has established that they did shake hands when Raila went to pay his respects to the family, after arriving at the burial service in Othaya, Nyeri County on Saturday, April 30.

A fact check on the original video footage shows that the two shook hands when Raila and the young man returned to his seat.

The video circulating online has been edited to create the impression that the young man ignored Raila. It has since created a buzz on social media platforms with different factions of the political divide using it to push their agenda.

Being an election year, politicians and their supporters have taken to social media to push their narratives and mud sling each other. Social media has become a platform for damaging reputation and gaining mileage ahead of the polls in August.

In a move to crack down on hate speech, the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) flagged 36 bloggers accused of making remarks bordering hate speech and incitement.

NCIC Chairperson Dr Samuel Kobia confirmed that the commission was going after the 36 affiliated with political leanings over their remarks and dangerous rhetoric on social media.

The 36 bloggers were alleged to be behind coordinated attacks orchestrated by the Azimio La Umoja coalition and the Kenya Kwanza alliance, led by Raila Odinga and Deputy President William Ruto respectively.

Dr Kobia, who addressed the press, stated that so far the commission had presented 9 cases before the court while the 27 others were still under investigation.

“We will make their names public soon,” Kobia said adding that they will seek to have social media accounts in contention suspended.

“The 36 are closely being monitored and the commission is currently investigating them with the aim of ensuring that they will be arraigned in court,” Dr Kobia stated.

NCIC further, rebuked the use of social media by political parties to promote hatred and violence in the country during this electioneering period.
