Anne Wamuratha, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate for the Kiambu Women Representative seat has issued an apology after she was captured throwing cake at people during an event.
In a statement on Wednesday, May 4, the politician expressed her regret over the incident, stating that the viral video was captured in 2021.
Despite being a past event, Wamuratha acknowledged that there were better ways of distributing food to people.
"I wish to confirm that I am the one captured in the Viral video throwing pieces of cake to a group of people who had gathered at the Ruiru Stadium for an event on November 7th, 2021. I was the cake matron of the day and errored in crowd control and appropriately sharing the cake.
"I deeply, and sincerely, apologize for the action and ask the people to forgive me. If I would turn back the clock, I would distribute the cake differently," read the statement in part.
Additionally, Wamuratha used the incident to campaign for her parliamentary bid stating that she would work to provide a 'bigger cake' for Kiambu residents.
"I am a mother and a wife determined to bake a larger cake of opportunities for the people of Kiambu and serve them diligently as their woman representative. Once again, I sincerely apologise and accept my mistake, it will never happen again," she stated.
The apology by the UDA politician comes days after the incident drew sharp criticism from a section of Kenyans who argued that there were decent ways of serving food.
Some online users demanded an apology even as they stated that Wamuratha's actions were disrespectful to the people of Kiambu.
"I have seen a disturbing video of Kiambu women representative aspirant throwing pieces of cake to residents like she is feeding chicken. May God forgive you Wamuratha. Kiambu residents you deserve better," Konoti Boris Tweeted.
Others also took issue with the event attendees for allowing themselves to be treated like animals.
"Wamuratha is busy throwing cake or whatever it to Kenyans like pigeons. Surely Kenyans why do we allow such? Such people deserve to be sent home very early in the morning," Brian Yuri, another social media user echoed.
