The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has set guidelines for Grade Six 2022 national examinations.

KNEC Chief Executive Officer, David Njengere, speaking on Friday, June 3, explained that the final Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) for Grade Six will be presented in multiple choice format.

Njengere detailed that the Grade Six exams, KPSEA, follows the Basic Education Curriculum Framework, guidelines that were unveiled by the Ministry of Education in 2019.

The framework was developed by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD). Grades Three, Four, Five, and part of Grade Six national assessments are formative, while learners will sit for a summative assessment at the end of Grade Six.

"The assessments have already been set and are ready for administration. Nothing has been changed in the format as this is the first final assessment under the CBC,” Njengere stated.

"The mode of assessment will entail a combination of teacher-administered formative assessment in Grades Four, Five, and Six and a summative assessment to be administered by KNEC at the end of Grade Six."

Parents and some students were wary that the exams would not follow the multiple choice format but follow the format used in the administration of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examinations (KCSE).

In the summative assessment, the Grade Six learners will be assessed in five subjects including Mathematics and English on the first day, Integrated Science and Kiswahili on the second day, and Creative Arts and Social Studies on the third day.

According to KNEC CEO, over 1.25 million students are set to sit for KPSEA before transitioning to Junior Secondary School.

The marking will be conducted using available resources and results released in line with the set guidelines. The KPSEA exams will be marked electronically since its multiple choice based except for Composition and Kiswahili Insha.
