Kenyan John Omo Re-Elected to Powerful Continental ICT Body

Kenya’s John Omo was on Tuesday, July 26 re-elected unopposed to the powerful African Telecommunications Union body as the Secretary-General.

The African Telecommunication Union is the leading Continental body entrusted with building consensus within African countries and coordinating African Common Proposals in international forums.

Mr. John Omo's re-election was confirmed through consensus, during the ongoing 6th Plenipotentiary meeting in Algiers, Algeria.

Mauritania withdrew its candidature to allow Mr. Omo to implement his five-point agenda for the next four years.

The event was graced by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Communications Authority of Kenya Ezra Chiloba, Principal Secretary State Department of Broadcasting and Telecommunication Esther Koimett among other officials from the Ministry of ICT.

John Omo boasts of a stellar track record in his first term, a foundation that made the Republic of Mauritania in the true spirit of African solidarity and Unity to let him serve another term.

Part of his five-point agenda include Bridging the digital divide in Africa, fostering inclusive Information Communication Technology (ICT) growth, tackling cyber security challenges, building a member-focused organization, and making Kenya the premier ICT institution for Africa.

Omo has over 29  years of experience as a lawyer and has been recognized by professional bodies for making contributions touching on the development of local and international policies, agreements, and treaties in regard to ICT matters.

Before he was elected to the African Telecommunication Union was in charge of providing legal services and strategies to CAK.

He hols a Bachelor of Law degree from the University of Nairobi and a Master of Law degree in International and Commercial law from the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom.

He has also has two diplomas, one in Human Rights Law from the UN Human Rights Centre, Geneva, and ILO Centre in Turin, Italy, and another in legal practice from the Kenya School of Law.

Since John Omo Joined the African Telecommunication Union in 2018, Kenya has mounted intensive campaigns  for senior positions in the United Nation Agencies.
