Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji's residence in Nairobi's Riverside suburb was broken into on Thursday night, August 5, by unknown assailants.
According to a police report, an unknown number of thugs broke into the DPP's residence and stole electronics.
Citizen TV reported that at the time of the robbery, two house helps and the children were in the house but no one heard anything. DPP Haji was not at home during the raid.
The thugs made away with a 75-inch Samsung TV, a Sony PlayStation 4 and assorted shoes.
Police have since processed and documented the scene pending further investigations by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
The National Police Service has since beefed up security at the residence even as they pursue the robbers.
Following the robbery, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) confirmed that the robbery took place. It, however, dismissed reports that the office had also been raided by the robbers.
"The DPP would like to clarify that there was a robbery at his residence, not his office, and investigations are ongoing.
"The ODPP, as a Prosecuting Authority, doesn’t collect or store evidence of any nature. Members of the public and media are urged not to politicize this incident," the statement read.
Although security has been beefed up in various parts of the country, the number of thugs raiding homes in high-end estates in Nairobi has also increased.
In July 2022, 7 suspected thugs were gunned down by police in separate incidents in a renewed war on armed crime in Nairobi.
Police revealed that they recovered two pistols, assorted crude weapons and other stolen property from the slain gunmen.
A report released by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) indicated that there was a 16.7 per cent increase in crime reported to the police in 2022.
According to the Economic Survey 2022 by KNBS, stealing was the most reported crime with 35.1 per cent, while Criminal damage and Dangerous drugs came in second and third with 31.1 per cent and 28.3 per cent respectively.
The report indicated that theft of stock and theft by servants was reported at 26.2 and 22.6 per cent while breaking, economic crimes, homicides and robbery stood at 17%, 14.8%, 5.5% and 3.0% respectively.
Penal code offences stood at 25.4 per cent and the data showed that the number of cases filed in courts increased by 5.5 per cent in 2021 to 362,332.
