Raila's academic credentials came into sharp focus during the clearance of candidates by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission - IEBC.

His opponents, led by UDA presidential candidate William Ruto, questioned his academic qualifications, claiming that he did not have a university degree.

In his early years, Odinga is said to have had some training in Germany before returning to the country and teaching at the University of Nairobi.

Nyeri Senator has publicly stated that Raila was his lecturer, at the University department of engineering.

However, Oburu revealed that Raila graduated with a Master's in Mechanical Engineering and Welding in Germany, The Masters's helped him secure a teaching job at the University of Nairobi in 1971.

The former premier has came under fire after a certificate from Magdberg raised more questions than answers as it had inconsistencies on how he managed to study at a university that does not appear on his certificate.

However, IEBC CEO, Marjan Hussein Marjan has stated previously that Raila's academic papers were authentic.

The former EALA MP  also recounted how his brother Raila was arrested after the 1982 attempted coup. Oburu noted that his brother was charged with treason and he came to know through the Nation newspaper.

Oburu, who is eyeing the Siaya senatorial seat, recalled how he went to Kwale as a civil servant to inspect development projects. During the rally, the then MP Juma Boy Juma called for the suspected coup plotters to be hanged.

Raila's mother died when he was in prison. His family pleaded with the ministry of home affairs to allow him to attend her funeral, but the late President Daniel Moi's government could hear none of it.

“When our mother died we pleaded with the ministry of home affairs to allow him to come to the funeral but they flatly refused, we were allowed to see him almost 6 months late,” Oginga recalled.
