Drama ensued on Thursday, August 11, after Kilifi North Member of Parliament, Owen Baya, made foray at a poling station demanding to be declared the winner.

The incident happened even as the vote counting exercise was underway, causing a commotion at Pwani University, the constituency's tallying centre.

According to Baya - who was vying on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party ticket - the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) was trying to rig him out through the delays in announcing final results.

“IEBC wants to doctor the results which shows I am the winner in order to issue my opponent the certificate after which they expect me to go to court," Baya alleged.

He had earlier called on his supporters to remain calm as IEBC tallied results in the hotly contested race.

Media reports indicated that Kilifi County Returning Officer (RO), Hussein Gure, was involved in the confrontation but is yet to take action against the politician.

Baya is the current MP of the constituency and is battling it out with the Pamoja African Alliance (PAA) party's Amani Mukere.

The counting process in the constituency is still ongoing as supporters of both sides eagerly await the results.

PAA is an affiliate party of Kenya Kwanza and its party leader is the outgoing Kilifi County Governor Amason Jeffa Kingi.

The constituency has seven wards with 101,978 total registered voters.

The wards include Tezo which has 12, 640 registered voters, Sokoni (20,552), Kibarani (12,376), Dabaso (12,620), Matsanga (13,509), Watamu (14,338), and Mnarani (15,943).

Kilifi forms larger part of six counties in the coastal region among them Kwale, Taita Taveta, Mombasa, Tana River, and Lamu.
