Motorists plying the Nairobi - Nakuru highway have been advised to exercise caution while using the road following heavy fog and mist in areas around Limuru, Kimende and Kinungi.

The advisory by the St John Ambulance came after a fuel tanker transporting diesel overturned in Kamandura area of Limuru.

In the advisory, St John Ambulance noted that motorists were struggling to manoeuvre the busy highway as the weather conditions kept on worsening.

Motorists were advised to observe set speed limits and maintain distance between them and other motorists.

"Limited visibility at Limuru/Kimende area along the Nairobi - Nakuru highway. Motorists using this section of the road at this hour are advised to be extremely careful and keep headlights or fog lights on," read the advisory.

According to reports, the tanker veered off the road early Saturday morning, August 27, before overturning near a cliff.

Preliminary reports indicate that the truck driver lost control.

Immediately after the accident, police rushed to the scene to normalise traffic flow on the highway which was disrupted by residents who were trying to siphon fuel.

Rescue teams were also deployed at the scene to help move the wreckage.

Road agencies and the police have warned of increasing cases of accidents with police indicating that most road carnages are preventable.

In a report released in June this year by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), over 2,000 Kenyans lost their lives in accidents on major highways between January and June 2022.

Following this, police launched a crackdown to tame rogue driving and prevent further loss of lives on highways.

“It is regrettable that most crashes are a result of human-related factors. Motorists and other road users are therefore reminded to remain vigilant, cautious, and responsible whilst in charge of a motor vehicle, or whenever using a public road as pedestrians,” police spokesperson, Bruno Shioso, stated during the launch of the crackdown.
