NARC Kenya Party Leader and Azimo la Umoja presidential running mate Martha Karua has called for justice in the presidential election petition at the Supreme Court.

Speaking during a funeral in Meru County, Karua stated that the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition is determined to maintain peace regardless of which way the seven-judge bench will rule.

However, the former cabinet minister maintained that justice has to prevail in the ruling for sustainable peace.

When the verdict is out, we all respect that. We want to maintain peace but for this to be achieved there must be justice because peace without justice is not sustainable," she stated.

Karua also defended Azimio’s decision to express dissatisfaction with the results announced by Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati through the petitions.

According to Karua, the Azimio coalition was in pursuit of the truth behind the circumstances that preceded IEBC's declaration of presidential election results.

“Our Constitution stipulates that if one is dissatisfied with the results, they have to seek legal redress and that is what we did,” she added.

Raila Odinga and Martha Karua filed a petition challenging the declaration of William Ruto as the winner in the elections held on August 9.

The petition highlighted reservations from the Azimio coalition regarding the conduct of the electoral process by the IEBC.

Key among the issues raised include the concern that Ruto did not attain the 50 plus one per cent requirement which is a statutory threshold for a winner in a presidential election.

The 72-page petition also alleged that Chebukati deliberately postponed elections in their strongholds to suppress the turnout, particularly in Mombasa and Kakamega.

Further, the former prime minister claimed the results of the election were manipulated by an intruder and that the numbers were infiltrated in favour of Ruto.

The judges of the apex court retreated on Friday, September 2, to prepare the final verdict ahead of the stipulated deadline of Monday, September 5.
