Motorists plying the Nairobi Nakuru highway were forced to spend the night on the busy highway following an overnight traffic snarl-up in Naivasha.
Multi reports indicated that the traffic started to build up between Gilgil and the Weighbridge.
A number of motorists were stuck in the snarl-up from 7 pm yesterday (September 2) to 6 am today.
A section of the road users pinned the blame on huge trucks using the weighbridge and called on the police and road authorities to intervene.
"We have slept on the road from 8 pm Nairobi to Gilgil (currently). No movement. No idea what’s causing the gridlock," one Lilian Oranga lamented on her social media pages.
The delays also saw parents lament over the situation as they feared for the safety and well-being of their children who were stuck in the gridlock.
On the other hand, other motorists called on the government to expand the highway mostly used by motorists travelling to Western Kenya.
"Western Kenya has been neglected since independence. Instead of using billions on the Expressway, President Uhuru Kenyatta should have constructed a superhighway on Nairobi-Mahi Mahiu/Nakuru roads to unlock the ever gridlock.
"Many suffer daily but nobody seems to care," Nyamu Dickson stated.
In response, Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) stated that it was working around the clock to address the matter.
KeNHA attributed the incident to a traffic incident near a rail on the roads bridge.
The authority cautioned motorists from overlapping and further compounding the situation and also advised others to avoid the area until the matter is resolved.
"Police are currently on site and working on the situation to restore normalcy. Motorists are advised to exercise lane discipline and avoid overlapping as they approach this section in order to avoid further congestion," the road agency stated.
