The 13th parliament kicked off on Thursday, September 8, following the gazette notice issued by President Uhuru Kenyatta. 

The notice stipulated the order of business whereby members of the National Assembly and the Senate would take the oath of office and also elect their speakers and deputies respectively.

The National Assembly will have 361 MPs including 12 nominated legislators while the Senate has 47 elected lawmakers and 20 nominated.

The race for the speaker of the National Assembly attracted 12 candidates including Kenneth Otiato Marende, Agano's David Mwaure Waihiga, and FORD-Kenya's Moses Wetangula among others.

The legislators who expressed interest in the position of Deputy Speaker Gladys Boss (Uasin Gishu), Moses Kirima ​(Central Imenti), Otiende Amollo (Rarieda) Peter Kaluma (Homabay Town) and Farah Yussuf Mohamed ​​​(Wajir West). 

On the other hand, former Kilifi governor Amason Kingi became the Speaker of the Senate race after Wiper party leader, Kalonzo Musyoka withdrew from the race. He received 46 out of 67 votes, garnering a first-round win. 

UDA's Kathuri Murungi was elected as Deputy Speaker of the Senate. 

During the proceedings, the Acting Clerk of the National Assembly, Serah Kioko swore in all the 337 elected members of the National Assembly will take their oath of office. 

Kioko makes history as the first woman to swear in legislators and also oversee the election of the speaker. 

 Further, the Kenya Kwanza coalition secured seven of twelve nominated seats in the National Assembly, with UDA acquiring five, Amani National Congress (ANC) and the United Democratic Movement (UDM) getting one seat each.

On the other hand, Raila Odinga's ODM bagged three seats, Jubilee secured one seat while Kalonzo's Wiper Democratic Movement also got one seat.
