A wanted suspected killer was nabbed by police in Nairobi thanks to his miscalculations with a phone belonging to the victim.

In an address to the press, Kajiado North DCI boss David Cheriot noted that the suspect was traced to Nairobi in a murder case of Beatrice Waithira Kariuki.

The heinous act occurred in Ngong where the deceased, who lived in the city, had gone to visit her family farm.

The DCI boss noted that the suspect - who was employed by the deceased - took the phone of the deceased, threw away her simcard and used his own for communications.

That allowed the detectives pursuing the case to track him down initially placing his location at Hamisi Sub-County in Vihiga.

After episodes of turning the phone on and off, the police caught up with the suspect after he fled the county to Nairobi.

"The suspect discarded the victim’s SIM card and began using his line on the handset. First, we tracked him to his rural home in Hamisi sub-county, Vihiga County.

"He switched off the phone only to resurface (in Nairobi). We swung into action and arrested him. He is in our custody waiting to be arraigned on October 11, 2022 for murder," the officer told the press.

The suspect went into hiding after the murder occurred at the farm along Ole Sena Road on September 19, 2022.

The deceased had sent a distress message to her husband before her body was found in one of the rooms on the farm, where the suspect lived.

"We found her with a rope on her neck. The rope was tied to the bed. Her legs and arms were also tied with a rope. It was a horrifying scene," a witness narrated to the press.

Police believe Waithira was killed by strangling.
