Motorists Spend Hours on Thika Road After Accident

Traffic flow at Thika superhighway was interrupted Tuesday, November 1, after two lorries rammed into each other, blocking a section of the busy highway.

The mid-day accident happened near Royasambu inconveniencing road users as police raced to restore order.

Motorists plying the route were forced to seek alternative routes to access the Nairobi Central Business District, CBD, through Outering Road, Jogoo Road and Kiambu Road.

According to photos seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the two lorries had a head-on collision. One of the trucks rammed into the other, damaging guard rails on the road.

The accident drew mixed reactions from Kenyans online, with speculations on possible cause, from drunk-driving to speeding.

The accident also happened when Nairobi and its environs was experiencing light showers, making the roads slippery with poor visibility.

"He was speeding the tried to break the second trailer he was pulling pulled him aside Centrifugal force to be precise," a twitter user said.

"That sand truck with the trailer could be the reason.speeding with such a trailer is tricky," said a social media user.

Drivers are advised to be more careful during the rainy seasons as sliding wheels are uncontrollable.

The accident happened days after a drunk driver claimed the lives of six people long the Eastern Bypass near Kamakis in Nairobi County.

Witnesses told the press that the car also hit two bystanders who were near the scene of the accident before stopping next to a car wash.

Later the same day, another Prado overturned at Ngong Road section between the Junction Mall and Lenana School.

Speaking exclusively to Kenyans.co.ke, Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) Director General, Silas Kinoti affirmed that the Eastern Bypass is an ongoing project that will be completed in January 2023.

"First thing we need to understand is that the Eastern Bypass. It's an ongoing project that will be completed by January 2023. Hence we will be engaging with various stakeholders to assess and see what we can improve."

The latest statistics from the National Transport and Safety Authority state that 1,912 people have died in road accidents since January 1, 2022.

Overall, the figures represent a 9% increase from 1,754 last year’s fatalities. Pedestrians account for the highest number of fatalities.

After pedestrians, motorcyclists followed with 530 deaths; passengers 308, pillion passengers 185 and 28 pedal cyclists.
