Sports Cabinet Secretary, Ababu Namwamba, on Thursday, December 15, secured jobs for 500 officers from the National Youth Service (NYS).

Tech giant Huawei organised the event, which brought together different stakeholders offering the jobs. The NYS officers will be placed in different sectors in January 2023. 

Speaking during the opening of the Nation-Huawei Job Fair 2022 in Nairobi County, Namwamba assured Huawei that the officers would be resourceful and prove their worth during the stipulated period. 

"The ministry has negotiated with Huawei for placement of 500 NYS graduates to be placed in different positions in January 2023," he announced.

"I have no doubt that this first cohort will be clear evidence of what NYS can do. More employers will be encouraged to go for employees at NYS," he stated.

In addition, Namwamba heaped praise on the NYS, adding that job creation for the youth was the top priority for the Kenya Kwanza government.

"We need to expand employment and opportunities for our young people," the CS added.

During the launch, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua lauded the NYS for according the youth with resourceful skills and discipline.

"I am a graduate of NYS in 1985 at Gilgil. It's a wonderful service," Rigathi stated.

Gachagua added plans for the government to use NYS personnel to replace police officers manning critical infrastructure.

"NYS officers will man the premises at a fee, which will be paid directly to the government," he announced.

According to Gachagua, the funds would be invested in training more NYS officials who would later serve the nation. 

"This personnel offers a combination of skills and discipline, and I can assure you that you can not go wrong when you employ these young people."
