Traders in Sachangwan shopping centre, Nakuru, suffered losses after a lorry rammed into three shops on Tuesday, December 20.
According to reports, the speeding lorry headed from Eldoret to Nakuru was ferrying heavy goods that were yet to be identified by the police officers.
Following the unfortunate accident, several people, including the driver, sustained injuries and were rushed to Nakuru Hospital for immediate medical attention.
"I got the news in the morning that a lorry rammed into my building. I have incurred a lot of losses. I hope others will offer help to rebuild," complained the owner of the building.
Luckily, no fatalities were recorded from the mid-morning accident.
"People called me in the morning that my shop was demolished. A lorry that speedily went up the hill came crashing into our shops," lamented one of the shop owners.
"This lorry rammed into the buildings and the value of the shops is still being assessed," added one of the residents.
Police officers and members of the Kenya Redcross Society arrived at the scene of the accident to assess the situation and help in rescue operations.
Also, area residents gathered as some made efforts to save those affected by the crash while attempting to salvage the food commodities, including bundles of wheat flour.
The residents urged motorists to be cautious, especially during the festive season.
In March 2022, two people were killed after a lorry rammed into a crowd at a shopping centre in Kiambu county.
According to reports, the lorry lost control and rammed a nearby boda boda rider and a fruit vendor at the edge of the newly-built Limuru-Ndenderu roundabout.
"This road has been a black spot as it has claimed lots of lives in the recent past. So I am urging the government to look into our plea as we have nearby schools whose learners we fear may be caught up in an accident at this spot," urged one of the residents.
According to data from the National Safety and Transport Authority (NTSA), the number of fatalities increased in 2022 the period January to December 13, compared to the same period in 2021.
2022 recorded 4,432 fatalities while in 2021 4,271 cases were reported.
