Education stakeholders raised concerns about a proposal for introducing new uniforms for junior secondary pupils.

Speaking to the media on Monday 2, parents asked the ministry of education to explain in-depth how the transition would happen.

They also challenged the ministry to clarify how the pupils in different grades would be differentiated if they remained in similar uniforms.

“How will it be with the uniform now that the junior high will be domiciled in primary school?

The Grade 7, lower primary and Class 8 will need different school uniforms for it will be easy to identify them,” Japhet Mwenda, a parent, challenged.

He stated that pupils needed to be well prepared so that they could also see that they transitioned to another level.

Parents also suggested the introduction of a high-levelled type of uniform that would act as a motivation to the pupils.

They wondered why the ministry was quiet on how the pupils in different levels would be differentiated.

“The pupils cannot wear the same shorts after being promoted to another grade. They need to be in trousers. We want to understand whether there will be a change,” parents argued.

Kenya Private School Association (KPSA) stated that the identity issue had become a delicate issue that needed handling.

Addressing the same on November 25, 2022, Presidential Working Party on education reforms announced that it was set to recommend a different uniform for Standard Seven and Eight learners

“For psychological satisfaction, the uniforms will distinguish them from the rest of learners because they will be at a higher level than their colleagues," Kenya Primary School Heads Association (KEPSHA) announced.
