Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja on Thursday, January 5, revealed how President William Ruto helped to influence the fast-tracking of the Nothern Collector project meant to solve the problem of water shortage in Nairobi.

The governor noted that he was in a meeting with the president when the latter committed to ending the problem of water challenges in the city.

True to his word, Ruto made phone calls to influential figures regarding the completion of the water project. According to him, the project was set to be launched in 2024 as was envisaged in retired President Uhuru Kenyatta's plan.

However, Ruto's commitment culminated in the decision to expedite plans and a decision that it will be launched on February 25.

“On Monday together with him (President Ruto), we made a few calls, and everything was set.

“I’m happy to announce that together with the President we will launch the Northern Collector Water next month,” the City governor stated.

Sakaja expressed his gratitude to Ruto noting that he had been supportive in his efforts to serve the people of Nairobi.

He revealed that the fate of the northern collector corridor was in limbo as it faced several hurdles that threatened to thwart plans to ensure a sufficient supply of water for city dwellers.

Once launched, the Ksh8.2 billion project will help to suffice the deficit of over 200 million litres of water needed to sustain Nairobi's population.

The project, according to the governor, was set for launch on February 25.

In addition, the governor put water cartels on notice - reminding them that the days of extorting city residents through illegal connections and other shady means were numbered.

"I want to tell the people who are used to illegal connections and stealing that they are not lucky, we are coming for you," he warned.

Sakaja's announcement came amid speculations of a frosty working relationship between him and the national government.
