Aunt & Grandmother Turn Against Suspect in Baby Sagini Case

The suspect involved in gouging out baby Sagini’s eyes found himself isolated in court on Wednesday, January 18 after both his aunt and grandmother distanced themselves from the crime.

In a twist of fate that is likely to dent his chances of being acquitted, the suspect was asked by his aunt and grandmother to produce Sagini’s eyes.

“I am good but let my son tell this court where he took Sagini’s eyes,” revealed the aunt.

During the court proceedings, the suspect left everyone in stitches when he decried that he was suffering in prison as lice and bedbugs were feeding on his blood at night.

“Why can’t you present the witnesses here as fast as possible because I am suffering in there. I never sleep and bedbugs and lice are feasting on me,” the suspect pleaded with the prosecutor.

Additionally, the prosecution counsel comprising, George Morara informed the court that social media users were infringing on baby Sagini’s privacy by posting sensitive information about his condition. 

In protecting the rights of baby Sagini, Senior Resident Magistrate Christine Ogweno asked the media and other social media users to avoid covering what would in any way infringe upon the privacy of the minor.

“The court reaffirms the need and importance to protect the privacy of the minor,

"The media and other social media users are directed to avoid covering what would in any way infringe upon the privacy of minors," Ogweno ordered. 

Baby Sagini was found dumped at his family’s banana plantation in December 2022 with his eyes gouged out and face covered with blood after being kidnapped.

Sagini was playing with other children in their home in the Marani sub-county within Kisii when an unknown man abducted him. 

Three suspects were later arrested, arraigned, and charged with attempted murder in relation to the attack on the youngster.

The three-year-old was later put under the protection of the state with the court urging anyone wishing to assist to do so through appropriate channels. 

The pre-trial hearing for the case is set for March 2.
