Nandi senator, Kiprotich Arap Cherargei, on Friday, February 3, sought to set records straight over a viral social media post that outrageously condemned a section of Kenyan business people.
Cherargei, who flagged the post as fake, asked social media users to ignore misleading information meant to create division.
The Nandi Senator also accused his political nemesis of engineering the fake social media post to tarnish his reputation and lead him into a warpath with businessmen from Mount Kenya.
"Ignore this devilish propaganda by political detractors," Cherargei warned as he distanced himself from the post.
Cherargei also asked Kenyans to pay their fair share in the tax revenues, noting that the country's economy can only be independent when everyone plays their roles.
The fake tweet alleged that the senator had condemned businessmen from Mount Kenya as tax evaders.
It also claimed the government would scathingly deal with the businessmen evading taxes, thus undermining efforts to recover the economy.
On Monday, January 30, President William Ruto affirmed that no Kenyan would be exempted from paying their taxes.
The Head of State warned the opposition that a political standoff would also not deter the government from cracking down on tax evaders.
“This country is not the animal farm where some are more equal than others, we are going to have a society where every citizen carries their fair share of our burden to raise our taxes.
“Even if they sponsor demonstrations, so they do not pay tax, I want to promise that they will pay taxes. There are no more exemptions," Ruto warned.
His deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, further invited those accused of not paying taxes to enter into agreements with the government on how they would remit the funds in instalments.
"Make arrangements, and pay. We are open to discussion. Come, and we will agree on how you can pay in bits. Say Ksh1 billion every month until you are done," Gachagua pleaded.
