Kirinyaga woman representative, Jane Njeri Maina, cleared her name after being accused of abandoning a Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) student.

During an interview with Inooro TV on Wednesday, February 8, Njeri was questioned by the student’s guardians on why she failed to fulfil her promise.

They added that despite the student scoring 370 marks in 2022 KCPE, she was yet to join secondary school due to financial instability.

In response, Njeri noted that she may have forgotten due to busy schedules, or her office staff would have failed to share the information with her.

“Maybe I did, but sometimes my employees give promises using my name. The kid I was sponsoring completed Form Four.

"I would like to tell them (the parents of the KCPE student) to take the kid to my offices for bursaries,” she explained.

She added that she could not abandon needy students; under her sponsorship, one candidate registered a B- in the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCSE).

“I am working on how she will further her studies after form four,” she added.

Encouraging the youth, Njeri asked them not to be choosy in looking for sources of income because they had attained degrees.

Relating to her life story, she narrated how she previously worked as a hawker despite being a qualified lawyer.

“I used to hawk clothes. I would go to a certain woman at River Road to purchase scarfs for sale. My father was a no-nonsense person so my grounding made me so disciplined and I would listen to someone like Martha Karua.

"I remember there is a day she visited our school at Kabare Girls, and desire to be like her in the future. My father would tell me that if something is helping me get money I should not despise it because am a lawyer,” she noted.

Issuance of bursaries has been a bone of contention with several students reportedly missing out on the aid.
