Yvonne Wanja Michuki, the daughter of former Transport Minister, John Michuki’s, resigned as a board member of the Agricultural Finance Corporation (AFC).
Yvonne cited personal reasons necessitating her resignation, in the letter addressed to Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi on March 2, 2023.
“I write to inform you that I have chosen to resign from the board of directors of AFC for personal reasons, effective immediately.
"It was an honour to serve on the Board of directors of the corporation. Thank you for the opportunity and I wish the ministry and the corporation all the best," she explained.
The Agricultural Finance Corporation is institutionalised under the AFC Act (Cap 323). It is mandated with assisting in the development of agricultural industries by making loans and providing managerial and technical assistance to the loan beneficiaries.
Her exit came amid the purge of President (Rtd) Uhuru Kenyatta's allies. President William Ruto and his Cabinet, since assuming power, went on a firing spree of the retired head of state's appointees.
The latest was a string of appointments in the parastatals, as Ruto moved to restructure the government.
Former Agriculture CS Peter Munya appointed Wanja Michuki through a gazette notice on May 13, 2022. She thus held her position for less than a year.
Her role as a board member was to advise AFC on how to reform the agricultural sector, especially the tea sector.
John Michuki’s youngest daughter holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics, from Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania, and a Master of Business Administration degree from Columbia Business School, both in the US.
In 2020, she joined the Ethical Tea Partnership (ETP), a UK-based fair standards lobby group where she led teams that aimed to reform livelihoods for smallholder farmers in Kenya, Malawi, and Rwanda.
In her Linkedin profile, she describes herself as a Salzburg Global Fellow and Mentor in Columbia Business School’s Global Family Enterprise Mentorship Program.
She is also the founder of Be Bold Consultancy and Advisory Limited. It is a private financial consulting and executive coaching company.
