Suspected armed robbers on Saturday, March 11, staged a robbery at a Murang'a bank during which an unknown amount of money, believed to run into millions, was stolen.

According to Murang'a Police Occurrence Book, the miscreants forcibly accessed the facility during work hours.

It was reported that the four suspected robbers first attacked policemen who were manning the bank, which is located in the County's central business district.

The suspects are reported to have tussled with the officers before making away with a gun.

"Two men wearing black private security uniforms with reflectors pretending to be hawkers approached them and started wrestling both of the,m (policemen) and were joined by other four thugs," read the police report in part.

The report further indicated that two members of the gang were armed with AK-47 rifles while others had crude weapons which they used to attack the police officers at the entrance.

"One of the thugs shot on the ground near a police officer's legs but he managed to pull out his G3A3 rifle magazine loaded with 20 ammunition and threw it to a nearby bush," added the report.

The incident that occurred at around 9 am left detectives with few clues, even as both the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the National Intelligence Service (NIS) took over the crime scene.

Detectives followed leads on a getaway motorbike and saloon car which were allegedly used by the suspected robbers.

Initial reports indicated that the attackers opened fire on a man who, unknowingly, stood in their way as they escaped the scene of the crime.

Kigumo Sub County security committee noted that the attackers fired around four shots during the incident but only one person was injured.

The committee also noted that the attack was well-planned by people who understood the activities of the bank and the police officers who were deployed to protect it.
