A grade five student at Namanjalala Primary School in Trans Nzoia was reported to have died after being punished by his teacher on March 10.

According to the parents, the 12-year-old student was ordered to run around the school playground 13 times, as punishment for breaking a goalpost.

The parents narrated that after completing the punishment, the student fainted and started vomiting blood.

The learner was then rushed home by the school security guard and later taken to Kitale County Hospital by neighbours.

“The boy was in good health when he went to school in the morning. The doctors told me that he was bleeding in his brain because he hit his head when he fell,” his mother stated.

On Saturday, March 11, outraged residents and parents held protests at the school demanding answers from the school administration.

The protestors stated that it was not an isolated incident accusing the teachers at the school of using corporal punishment on their children.

“We cannot keep losing our children in the hands of those who are supposed to care for them.

“We want the police and Ministry of Education officials to investigate the matter and ensure that we get justice," Benard Wanjala, a resident stated.

On the other hand, the Directorate of investigations (DCI) coordinator at Trans Nzoia Francis Kihara stated that they had already launched investigations and key witnesses had recorded statements.

"We are on top of the matter and starting Monday, you will see heads rolling. This is a very unfortunate occurrence,” stated Kihara.

The incident happened as police continue with investigations concerning a separate case where two teachers were accused of beating a form one student to death two weeks after joining a school in Nandi.
