"To this point, I don't know what to do," 28-year-old Hannah Mwaura stated as she contemplated the possibility of giving her two children away due to the tough state of the economy.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Mwaura detailed her struggles which dated back to the pandemic period when she lost her job - packing avocadoes at a local company in Thika, Kiambu County.

Facing deterrent challenges, the mother of two - a nine-year-old son and a two-year-old daughter - delved into washing clothes at a fee.

"During the pandemic, I was let go from the avocado company which paid me Ksh600 per day. After that, life became hard and I began to do laundry duties. This, however, came with its challenges as most of my customers did not pay," she stated.

Adding to her woes, Mwaura was also faced with five months of rent arrears which amounted to Ksh13,500.

According to the 28-year-old, she bore the full responsibility of fending for her children as their fathers were not involved in their lives.

Further, her parents were not in a position to assist her because they also lived in abject poverty.

"My mother resides in Kirinyaga while my father stays in Nakuru. They separated some time back so everyone lives their own lives. They currently don't know what I'm going through," she noted.

Mwaura resorted to living on hand-outs from well-wishers. When the plan backfired, she recalled opting to take her own life and the lives of her children owing to the difficult times.

As a last resort, the mother reached out to Machachari actress Clara Wamaitha Ngethe alias Cindy to purchase her children for Ksh10,000.

"I joined on Facebook and inboxed Machachari's Cindy to buy the children at Ksh10,000 for both. She responded by saying she could not buy and would not let me sell them. Cindy decided to help me," she narrated.

According to Mwaura, Cindy reached out to the media to air her plight as well as bought a whole month's supply of shopping. While issuing a plea to Kenyans of goodwill, Mwaura noted that she sought well-wishers to help her secure a job.
