The National Police Service through the Inspector General (IG) of Police Japhet Koome on Sunday, April 2, announced a raft of changes.

The changes were made at a time when the police service has been under intense scrutiny over the crackdown on protestors and journalists

In one of the major changes, Gideon Nyale Munga who previously served as the head of the Anti-Terror Police Unit was made the new director of operations at the Kenya Police headquarters in Nairobi.

The reassignment of Munga was confirmed to Kenyans.co.ke by police spokesperson Resila Atieno Onyango.

On March 2021, the then police boss Hillary Mutyambai moved Munga from Anti-Terror Police Unit to be the director of reforms at police headquarters.

In the newly announced changes, Munga swapped positions with Boniface Maingi.

IG Koome further made sweeping changes in Nairobi County in relation to security command.

Five sub-county police commanders reportedly drawn from Kilimani, Embakasi, Njiru, Central and Dagoretti were moved during the overhaul.

The reshuffle was made a few days before Munga appears before the National Police Service for the interview.

Munga had been among the candidates shortlisted for an interview on Tuesday, April 4, for the position of Deputy Inspector General of Kenya Police.

Candidates who had been shortlisted for the position include; Birech David Kipkosgei, Bunei David Rono, Makokha Vincent Kinas, Kabogo Jacinta Muthoni, Kiplagat Maurice Kipkoech, and Kirocho Douglas Kanja.

Others include: Kuraru Rosemary Sipatan, Mwatsefu Abdalla Komesha, Lamet Judy Jebet, Odera Tom Mboya, and Shioso Bruno Isohi.

Police are under sharp focus over use of excessive force during Azimio protests in parts of Nairobi and Kisumu.
