President William Ruto on Wednesday, April 5, announced a change in the ownership process for the government's affordable housing units.

Addressing Kenyans living in Rwanda, the President revealed that the government would launch a new system that Kenyans will use to buy the affordable houses.

The system dubbed Boma Yangu Initiative will enable Kenyans across the world to have equal access to the available housing units.

“Wherever you are now, you can buy our local housing units even from here in Rwanda,” the President revealed

The Head of State further announced that locals from the regions where the housing units are situated would not be given priority during allocation.

“You can buy our affordable housing units in any part of Kenya. You do not have to buy a unit in your village or your town,” he stated.

This was a radical departure from what the President promised Kenyans on October 3, 2022.

While commissioning affordable housing in Mukuru slums, Ruto announced that the government would use order of priority in allocating the houses.

For the houses across the country, Ruto announced that people living in deplorable conditions would be given preference.

"For affordable housing, a one-bedroom will go for Ksh6,600 while a two-bedroom will go for Ksh10,000 and that is a mortgage, not rent. In 15-25 years, they will become homeowners of this country," Ruto stated.

In his ambitious housing plan, Ruto aims to construct over 200,000 affordable housing units by 2027.

The units are expected to benefit the country’s 2-3 million households.

The President has already launched the project in Nairobi, Machakos, Nyamira, Nakuru and Homa Bay counties.
