The Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli, on Saturday, April, proposed a constitutional reform to tame former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Addressing COTU members, Atwoli opined that the 2010 Promulgated Constitution should be amended to designate a specific role to Uhuru and other presidents who retire after their 10-year tenure ends.

The trade unionist advocated for creating the Peacemaker role, which he insisted should be a constitutional mandate.

"But remember, in 2017, I warned that Uhuru would cause many problems once he retires. I said he has a lot of money and cannot just sit around.

"We should get to a point and squeeze this constitution and say once he has served for 10 years, he should become a peacemaker. That should be advocated for in the Constitution," Atwoli stated.

At the same time, Atwoli disclosed that several leaders had pressured him to hold mediated between President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Responding to their requests, Atwoli indicated that Uhuru would have handled the situation better if he was apolitical.

He thus challenged Uhuru to desist from being dragged into the Jubilee Party wrangles and drop all political engagements.

"I urge our retired President, he should be a peacemaker. If you ask me to mediate between Raila and Ruto, Uhuru Kenyatta would have been doing that," Atwoli stated.

"Because once you become a retired president, you don't need to take sides. You are expected to be a peacemaker in your country and internationally," he criticised the former President for siding with Azimio La Umoja's Raila Odinga.

What Uhuru Said on Jubilee Wrangles

On Wednesday, April 26, Uhuru made an impromptu visit to Jubilee Party headquarters in Kileleshwa and castigated the deviant Jubilee members for causing mayhem.

"Anyone who wants to leave a party can join another. We have no quarrel with anyone. We want to guard our party, and those who do not want, are free to leave," he added.

"Let us maintain peace. Police officers have better things to do other than coming here to restore peace. We don't have issues with anyone, our mandate is to maintain peace," he added.

Following his sentiments, nominated MP Sabina Chege implored him to convene a crisis meeting to address the wrangle between the differing parties.

On Saturday, April 29, Uhuru called for a National Delegates Conference (NDC) at Bomas of Kenya, to chart the way forward.
