Helen Hope, based in the US, raised Ksh7.7 million in honour of her daughter's legacy, who passed on following a tragic car accident in April 2022.

Hope participated in the Markey Drayton race and finished the contest.

Over 50 other contestants joined her in the race, which targeted raising Ksh86,256 for her daughter's course in supporting less privileged students in Kenya.

The grieving mother was, however, surprised as the participants raised over Ksh1.7 million, surpassing the target. That raised her daughter's legacy fund to Ksh7.7 million as he had raised the balance before.

"It's staggering. That's a life-changing amount for kids in Kenya. It could mean a different life and world for many of them," the race organisers stated.

"Originally, the amount we had covered around five years of education for the children, now it's up to around nine years of university. It covers tuition, accommodation, and everything to cover the cost of their education," they added.

What Happened to Her Daughter

Hope's 19-year-old daughter was in her second year of training to become a primary school teacher at Edge Hill University. She had planned to relocate to Kenya to become a teacher.

However, her dreams were cut short following a tragic car accident where she died. The accident left her mother nursing serious injuries.

Before her death, she had visited several children's homes in Kenya and volunteered in several initiatives which helped street children.

After the crash, Hope started an initiative to keep her daughter's legacy alive in Kenya.
