Tenants living in old estates owned by Nairobi City County are set to get a new lease of life after Governor Johnson Sakaja's administration initiated plans to revamp the houses.

In a notice, Nairobi City County indicated that the programme was aimed at urban regeneration and renewal of old estates.

"This is geared towards the Governor's Manifesto of making Nairobi a city of order, dignity, hope and opportunities for all," the notice read in part.

To allow the project to take off, Nairobi City County invited tenants, estate residents and neighbours to contribute to the facelift programme by sharing their views through the public participation forums.

According to the county, the public participation drive was critical in accessing the beneficiaries of the county's affordable houses.

"The objectives of these forums are to prepare the public for the commencement of the construction works by the contractors," the county announced.

Residents and beneficiaries in Huruma, Kariobangi South, Kariobangi North, Buruburu Estate, Bondeni, Ziwani and Bahati were invited to participate in the public participation forums before regeneration commences.

Maringo, Jericho, Lumumba, Embakasi and Woodley estates residents were also invited to share their views on how to facelift the old Nairobi County houses.

The defunct Nairobi Metropolitan Service kick-started the plan to revitalise Nairobi estates. The Mohamed Badi-led unit repaired apartments and other houses in various parts of the city, including Buruburu and Donholm.

Besides rehabilitating the houses, the outfit partnered with the national government through the affordable housing programme to give city dwellers decent homesteads

The plan aligns with President William Ruto's proposal to build 1 million houses by 2027, focusing on low-income earners. To achieve the plan, Ruto collaborated with private development partners to build the houses and provide financial assistance to top prospective home buyers.

Ruto announced plans to start a 3 per cent house levy deduction to all civil servants to fund the project further.
