20 students collapsed on Friday, May 26, after anti-riot police officers lobbed teargas in their school in Kawangare, Nairobi.
It was reported that the students were taking their morning lessons when police officers engaged Kawangware traders in running battles.
As the police shot teargas to disperse the traders, some canisters landed in the nearby school, causing panic and forcing the students to scamper for safety.
However, several students were unlucky as they were affected by the drenching smoke of teargas bellowing from the canisters.
The affected students were later taken to various hospitals around Kawangware Estate, where they received treatment for breathing difficulties.
However, Some students were placed on basic First Aid treatment at the school compound and asked to rest.
It was observed that the students who remained in school were in stable condition and did not need direct medical admission at hospitals.
Police have yet to release a statement to clarify the incident.
Meanwhile, the protests led to disruption of transport along Naivasha Road, Nairobi, after disgruntled traders engaged police officers in running battles.
The protest also affected adjacent roads leading to Riruta, Wanye and other parts of Kiambu County.
Aggrieved traders were reportedly agitating against decisions by the Nairobi County administration to demolish their kiosks allegedly constructed on footpaths and feeder roads.
Police had difficulty clearing the roads on which the protesters had burnt tyres and destroyed campaign posters.
