A church wedding turned chaotic in Molo, Nakuru County, on Saturday, August 5, when a woman stormed the ceremony, claiming to be the groom's first wife.

The woman, identified as RO, felt betrayed by the groom's actions and sought to know why her husband proceeded to marry their house help without her consent.

She added that she was aggrieved by the groom's decision to abandon her after 22 years of marriage.

Irate at the turn of events, she wondered how she was unable to suspect a marital relationship between her husband and the house help.

"We have stayed together for 22 years. She came looking for work, and I welcomed her into my house to be my househelp. As a good Samaritan, I contributed Ksh1,000 to buy her clothes," an infuriated RO told the press.

"I would leave her to do chores as I went to work. This time round, my husband has alienated his duties, but I know God is going to take care of them. All I want is for my children to be taken care of," she added.

The drama ensued after she made her way to the venue minutes after the groom and the bride had walked down the aisle. An altercation occurred, leading to a bitter exchange between her and the surprised groom.

Minutes later, Nakuru-based police officers arrived at the scene to restore order and restrained the embattled wife from disrupting the event. After the tension simmered down, the groom and the bride proceeded with the wedding, much to the chagrin of the first wife.

It remains unclear whether RO's actions were prompted by the priest's call, urging attendees to halt the wedding with concrete reasons or forever hold their peace.

RO was also yet to disclose whether she had other concrete evidence to back her claims other than siring children with her husband.

According to data released by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) in January 2023, the chances of married people divorcing or separating are 1.3 times higher than a decade ago.

661,628 households were headed by persons who had separated from their spouses, according to KNBS.

At the same time, according to the 2023 Child Protection Data released by the Directorate of Children Service (DCS), child neglect ranked top with 54.1 per cent in the cases children face.

Others include manhandling (2.4 per cent), being abandoned (3.9 per cent), child truancy (4.1 per cent) and battle for custody (16.5 per cent).
