In the wake of former President Uhuru Kenyatta handing over power to President William Ruto on September 13, 2022, a distinctive but predicted pattern emerged among cabinet secretaries of the Jubilee administration.
While some reverted to private lives, others remained on the political scene in an attempt to resuscitate their careers.
In Ruto Government
President William Ruto retained some in his Cabinet, like former Labour CS Simon Chelugui, who was transferred to the Cooperative docket. The Head of State also appointed former Energy CS Monica Juma as his advisor.
Ruto further appointed former EAC CS Adan Mohamed to the Kenya Leather Development Council board in April this year.
Joe Mucheru
The former ICT CS currently serves as the President of JUMO, a technology company specialising in developing financial services and infrastructure for institutions such as banks.
Mucheru was appointed to the position on January 30 and tasked with leading the organisation to meet its targets.
In particular, the former CS was mandated to spearhead the company's programmes in Africa.
"Coming back to the private sector was much easier because you can operate with a much more focused view on society and the things you need to do,” the CS stated during an interview with a local news website on August 1.
Sicily Kariuki
The former Water CS is a leadership and Emotional Intelligence coach and the founder and CEO of Re-imagine Impact Associates.
The company offers mentoring and team leadership programmes. In her new capacity, she mentors various leaders and organisations across the globe on leadership.
"RIAL was established to support leaders to identify, develop and fully realize their potential and become exceptionally effective through the application of customized leadership development solutions that enable stellar performance," the company states on its website.
Notably, the former CS resigned from the cabinet on February 2022 to contest for the Nyandarua gubernatorial seat but opted out of the race months before the elections.
Margaret Kobia
The former Public Service CS serves as Chancellor at St. Pauls University of Kenya.
She also works as an adjunct research professor at the Univesity of Nairobi, with her work majorly domiciled at the Directorate of African Women Studies Centre.
The professor of Management and Entrepreneurship was tasked with reviewing and improving the syllabus concerning the students' emerging trends and needs.
Amina Mohamed
The former Sports CS was selected to lead a team of Commonwealth election observers that will be heading to Zimbabwe to assess the conduct of the elections scheduled for August 23 this year.
Ambassador Mohamed was selected for the position by Commonwealth Secretary-General, Rt Hon Patricia Scotland, on August 10.
"The observers will assess the conduct of the process as a whole and, where appropriate, make recommendations for the strengthening of the electoral system in Zimbabwe," read the statement in part.
Prior to landing the role, Mohamed served as the second Chancellor of the International University of East Africa in Uganda, a position she assumed on Wednesday, February 16.
Najib Balala
The former Tourism CS currently serves as the Vice President of Flora & Fauna International (FFI) since November 2022.
FFI is a global body that works with conservation agencies across the world to advance the protection of nature.
Balala's appointment was credited to his vast experience in the industry, and he was also tasked with being the organisation's global ambassador.
Farida Karoney
As per her LinkedIn account, the former Land CS currently works as a change leader and a mentor.
She also serves as a patron of the FK Foundation.
Karoney is a media and communication expert, having worked at Royal Media Services as a Group Editorial Director (2009 -2014) and Chief Operating Officer (2014 -2018).
Active in politics
Former Agriculture CS Peter Munya is still active in politics and is one of the principals in Azimio led by Uhuru and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
