Three separate accidents occurred on Saturday along Mombasa Road, causing 32 people to be hospitalised with varying degrees of injuries, according to a statement issued by Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti.
Governor Ndeti's statement revealed that one of the accidents took place in the Mto wa Mawe area and involved an oil tanker.
Two other accidents occurred at Kyumvi Junction, with one of them involving a lorry and the other a minibus carrying a full load of passengers.
“An oil tanker reportedly lost control and overturned on the road, causing a massive oil spill at the scene,” Wavinya stated revealing the first accident occured at 6:30 PM.
The Governor revealed that she promptly activated the nearby Emergency Response Teams, including the Kyumvi Highway Ambulance and the Mavoko Fire Engine, to respond to the situation.
With assistance from the Kyumvi Police Station and the MI5 ambulance, the team effectively managed to control and contain the incident.
Regarding the other two accidents, Wavinya reported that officers successfully evacuated 32 survivors, who were immediately transported to Machakos Level 5 Hospital for urgent medical attention.
“Health personnel have reported that the majority of the survivors suffered soft tissue injuries. Five of them require an X-Ray, debridement, or stitching,” she observed in the update.
The Governor further stated that, out of the three accidents, there were no reported fatalities.
She also provided reassurance to the families of those affected, affirming her administration's commitment to employing all available resources to guarantee optimal care for the injured.
NTSA Statistics
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has reported that in the timeframe spanning January to June 25, 2023, Kenya witnessed a total of 2,124 road fatalities.
Among these tragic incidents, 729 individuals were pedestrians, while 561 were motorcyclists.
Additionally, the data indicates that 403 passengers lost their lives, alongside 196 pillion passengers and 189 drivers, all as a result of road accidents. The remaining casualties were pedal cyclists.
