The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) intercepted narcotics being shipped to Kenya through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Ikeja, Lagos.

According to a statement from NDLEA on Sunday, the illegal substances including ephedrine, skunk, and nitrous oxide were concealed within semovita packs and dried pepper.

The substances often known as laughing gas were being flown to South Africa through Nairobi.

It is believed to be part of an intricate drug trafficking ring operating in Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa.

NDLEA called upon Nigerian residents to be cautious of packages they receive from other people to avoid being implicated in such incidences.

"The parcel of a packaged food item isn't always what you think it is. Again, we insist, don't accept any item not packed by you when traveling. Save yourself the ordeal," the agency stated.

The officials also raided the houses believed to be hosting the suspects, arrested them, and seized luxury vehicles.

According to Femi Babafemi, the Director of Media and Advocacy for NDLEA, the suspects were involved in the distribution of cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, and ephedrine.

Kenya has been in the spotlight due to increased cases of drug trafficking especially in India.

In August drugs amounting to over Ksh1.2 billion were intercepted by Indian detectives. Most of these drugs were being transported from Kenya.

The increased cases raised an alarm forcing the Asian country to tighten its security.

India's Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) is on the lookout for cartels recruiting Kenyans especially women to traffick drugs in the Asian country.
