Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, on Monday, set December 2024 as the timeline for the rollout of the Bus Rapid System (BRT).

In a statement, the CS detailed that the government was keen on rolling out the programme in line with its intentions of using climate-friendly modes of transport and addressing the traffic menace within the city.

Murkomen added that they were engaging with development partners, including the European Investment Bank, which already supports part of the mega project.

BRT was unveiled by President Uhuru Kenyatta's administration in 2018 and is yet to kickstart despite key installations along major highways in Nairobi, such as Thika Road.

"The Government is working with investors and development partners to offer an infrastructure sector that is modelled to advantage the majority population that uses public transport and non-motorized transport even as we work on modifying existing road infrastructure to encourage e-mobility," read the statement in part.

Murkomen made the revelation in relation during the ongoing Africa Climate Summit being held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).

As per the plan, the government seeks to partner with private investors and matatu stakeholders to offer electric vehicle services.

On the other hand, he indicated that the country would adopt climate-friendly technologies as they implement the BRT system.

"We are offering incentives to encourage the purchase of electricity-powered engines, expansion of commuter rail networks with a plan to move to light rail, development of non-motorized transport systems and effecting corrective structural adjustments on our roads to reduce road carnages," he stated.

As per government plans, BRT will be implemented in five phases covering major roads in the city.
