KTN news anchor Purity Museo has recalled her professional journey, from the time she interned at Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) while living in Kibra slums, Nairobi to becoming one of the prominent news anchors at Standard Group PLC.
In an interview with Kenyans.co.ke, the news anchor, who grew up as an orphan, said that she relocated to Nairobi in 2014 while looking for an internship opportunity during her third year of studies at Moi University, Uasin Gishu County.
During that time, she was taken in by a friend who agreed to share living expenses with her. Unfortunately, things didn't work out between them, leading to Museo being asked to leave the house.
Unsure of where to turn, she reached out to her former high school mentor, who connected her with a friend named Joyce Nduku, residing in Kibra.
"I couldn't afford a Ksh500 house in Kibra at that time. My university life was sustained through online writing, and I relied heavily on the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB),"she said.
During her six-month stay with Nduku, she noted that her host never asked for anything in return for her hospitality.
She later secured an internship position at KBC but returned to Eldoret to finish her studies.
After completing her fourth year of Mass Communication studies in 2015 and graduating in September 2016, Museo returned to Nairobi.
She volunteered at Ebru TV as a reporter and rented a bedsitter in Zimmerman, Nairobi.
" There was a time when I came back from work and found my entire house was ransacked. I relocated to Jamhuri, Nairobi, and started from scratch," she noted.
Following several months of volunteering, Museo secured a contract with Ebru TV and received allowances ranging from from Ksh7,000 to Ksh10,000.
Two years later, she left the station and rejoined KBC as a reporter in November 2018. Eventually, in May 2022, the news anchor resigned and joined Standard Group PLC on June 1, 2022.
"The beauty with life is when you're patient, things can only get better," she advised the youth seeking employment in the country.
