Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has banned Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza's meetings in the county following the chaos that marred her recent events, leading to damage of property and attack on police officers.
Kindiki announced on Friday in Meru that he had received information that Mwangaza's team was part of those who caused chaos in the meeting by insulting the crowd and attacking those in attendance in order to defend the governor.
Those who were attacked then fought back, which burst into the chaos that was witnessed in the outreach programmes dubbed Okolea which donate items to residents.
"I have received reports that those in Governor Mwangaza's team caused chaos, insulted the crowd and attacked those in attendance, thinking that they are defending Meru governor," he said.
"But all the same, those who were attacked also broke the law. Now, when it comes to that, in order to ensure that there is order and people adhere to the law, I will stand firm and be strict on politicians who try to cause chaos."
Kindiki confirmed that the Okolea meetings would be banned forthwith and the Ministry would only allow meetings that promote peace.
"If you want to hold a meeting, the purpose should be telling people your agenda and pledge peacefully, but those of creating chaos will never happen. Have you heard me? This is final," he added.
"The same way we were very firm with violent protestors of Azimio who were breaking properties and attacking people in the pretext of politics we will not allow it. Even here we will not allow it. I've seen in the media that there are those planning another meeting in Imenti Central, it will not happen."
The Interior CS had ordered law enforcement officers to arrest and prosecute suspects who disrupted the governor's event. He emphasised that no violence would be tolerated as it only undermines the rule of law.
"Citizens, including political leaders of all ranks and all political parties or formations, must carry out their activities lawfully and peacefully without exception," he stated.
As a result, ten suspects were arrested and accused of destroying items that had been donated by the governor, injuring eight police officers, and destroying county government and police vehicles.
