Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) Chairman Caleb Kositany on Monday revealed that the government was investigating bribery claims at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
This was after one Clay Onyango complained that airport staff were asking for up to Ksh50,000 bribe to allow Kenyans to travel to Canada.
Onyango had claimed that at the airport, people with tourist visas were being harassed and asked to pay bribes before they could be allowed to board an airplane.
“Can someone help us to get Clay to respond? Any allegations made we take seriously and we will investigate thoroughly,” Kositany stated.
In screenshots shared by the KAA Chairman, it was evident that the airport authorities had been trying to contact Clay since Thursday, October 5.
This was a day after Clay made the bribery claims in a series of TikTok videos.
“My attention has been drawn to your recent TikTok video on harassment and bribery allegations at JKIA. We would like to pick up the issue and get to the bottom of it,” a staff from JKIA had told Clay.
He further asked Clay to provide more information on the reports that Kenyans with tourist visas were being denied travel to Toronto, Canada.
Clay did not respond to the JKIA staff but a spot-check on his socials showed that he continued to make allegations on the conduct of airport employees.
Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has promised to micromanage JKIA so as to streamline it for efficiency.
On August 6, the Transport CS fired top staff at the airport after a national power outage that left JKIA temporarily in darkness after its backup generators failed to work.
A day later, he announced that he would launch a crackdown on rogue businesses operating at the airport.
