Kenya Railways (KR) on Monday announced the resumption of all cargo operations at the Port of Mombasa which had been halted on Saturday following heavy rains.
In a statement, KR announced the successful completion of interventions between the Mariakani and Mombasa Terminus sections, affected by damage, resulting in the suspension of operations.
With the repair work concluded, normalcy has been restored along the stretch, allowing all Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) trains to resume their scheduled operations.
“Loading and unloading of cargo at the Port of Mombasa has also commenced, and we are now working round the clock to minimise any delays,” the agency stated.
“SGR passenger train services continue as per schedule.”
Kenya Railways further assured Kenyans that all security and safety precautions had been observed before the notice announcing the resumption of services.
The Mariakani to Mombasa Terminus had been closed after heavy El Nino rains caused landslides in the region.
At the time, Kenya Railways announced the immediate suspension of freight trains.
Passenger trains were permitted to proceed through the section, subject to reduced speed limitations and stringent supervision.
Mombasa, Machakos, and Makueni Counties have borne the brunt of El Nino.
This has caused recurrent transport disruptions between Mombasa and Nairobi.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua issued a warning on Sunday, advising motorists and individuals against driving through floodwaters.
He also announced the establishment of a command centre at the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) headquarters to facilitate emergency responses.
