Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu on Monday officially released the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results.
The CS released the results at Moi Girls Eldoret flanked by top education and government officials after briefing President William Ruto.
A total of 903,260 students sat last year's KCSE exams, an increase from 881,416 candidates who took the exams in 2022.
Initial oral and practical papers were administered in February but the official sitting of the exams kicked off at the beginning of November 2023.
During the briefing, President William Ruto directed the Education CS to probe why some 3,000 students registered for KCSE but failed to take the exams.
The Ministry further directed all principals to ensure that their candidates are registered for the 2024 KCSE within the next two months, ruling out the possibility of an extension. The registration process will run between January 29 and March 29.
The Ministry confirmed that before the start of the Examinations, there was no prior exposure to the examination materials. As a result, the Ministry promised to uphold the integrity of the national examinations.
CS Machogu, in his speech, revealed that President William Ruto promised to hire an additional 20,000 teachers in 2024.
He also revealed that Rto was determined to ensure children from poor backgrounds will access all levels of learning.
"The Treasury released Ksh31 billion to support learners," stated Machogu indicating that
Ksh 4.74 billion was allocated free primary, Ksh2.8 billion for examination fees and Ksh16 billion for secondary school.
Candidates unimpressed by the results were also directed to file their complaints with the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) within 30 days of the release date.
The TSC CEO, who was also in attendance, announced that the number of vacancies for principals has risen after teacher exits and noted that the commission will move to fill 198 such positions.
She further called all teachers who applied for promotions to present themselves for interviews.
PS Belio Kipsang, on the other hand, assured school principals that the Ministry has released a capitation promising that the money will be reflected in banks on Wednesday this week. Ruto had earlier released Ksh31 billion ahead of the school reopening.
He also noted that all examiners will be paid before the end of the week, an improvement from previous years where examiners went for months without their dues.
