National Assembly Deputy Speaker Gladys Boss Shollei on Monday, January 8, highlighted how she used to be at the bottom of her class during her primary school days.
The Uasin Gishu County Woman Representative made the confession during the release of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) 2023 at Moi Girls High School Eldoret.
While making her remarks, she encouraged 2023 KCSE candidates to embrace the results they have received.
She further encouraged the candidates that they will face tests in their lives and at every chance they have, they have a chance to improve.
“You can define your circumstances, do not let this define you,” she stated.
Referencing her personal education journey, Shollei highlighted that while at Hill School in Eldoret, she was at the bottom of her class in the CPE examinations which deterred her from joining secondary school.
However, this did not stop her from soldiering on as she joined her sister at Loreto Convent Matunda where the nuns allowed her to continue with her studies after which she ended up top of her class.
“I could not get a place at secondary school, but because my sister was already at Loreto Convent Matunda, the nuns decided to allow me to go to the school just to keep us together. By the time I had finished at Loreto Matunda, I was top of my class.”
Shollei further urged students who might not perform well to join the university to apply for Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TvET) programs.
Additionally, the legislator urged the Ministry of Education to make the examining system to be an accommodating programme rather than an elimination program.
A total of 903,260 students sat last year's KCSE exams, an increase from 881,416 candidates who took the exams in 2022.
CS Machogu during the release of the results, remarked that the Ministry of Education had sealed loopholes for exam cheating.
Earlier, President William Ruto had tasked the Ministry to crack down on teachers and students engaging in exam malpractices.
